Mercy, 18 – Maternal Health

Calabar, Nigeria: Mercy, age 18, who is an orphan, was sexually exploited beginning at age 15. At age 17 she was gang raped and became pregnant. She had a complication during labor and needed an emergency life-saving c-section. The doctor said that without the c-section, Mercy would have had a ruptured uterus and she and her baby likely would have died. She was in a coma for three days after giving birth, but now is conscious and recovering.
